“Taking their name from the 50s American blues label started as an offshoot of Nashville’s Nashboro, The Excellos beautifully pay homage to that era while uncannily evoking the atmosphere of the early 60s British blues boom. That’s Slim Harpo with a moonshine-breathed John Lee Hooker on his trail, or Cyril Davies-era Blues Incorporated, rather than later Stones-derived mutations, as the band works its hoodoo by deploying snaky guitars, featherlight drums, thudding double bass and Craig Shaw’s swirling harmonica, rather than lazy bludgeoning. The Excellos has always been Shaw’s baby, releasing a self-titled first album in 2009, then several 45s on Rollin’. Now with Germany’s Stag-O-Lee (who released the debut set on 10” in 2011), a dozen dirty excursions into deepest R&B with its nerves exposed and veins pulsing. Apart from slithering through George Hamilton IV’s Everybody’s Body, two abrasive Willie Dixon covers (I Just Want To Make Love To You, Mellow Down Easy) and, weirdly but effectively, Adele’s Rumour Has It, Shaw wrote everything else, including the Chicago-style Angel Delight, slide-scathing Blood Red Rider and the shuffling Doing The Do. All authentic-sounding controlled dynamite, with that essential roll.”

“Straight-ahead, high energy jazz is his line and he does it with aplomb”
The Guardian

Over his twenty-five year career Simon Spillett has worn almost as many hats as it’s possible to wear within jazz; multi-award-winning instrumentalist (BBC Jazz Awards, British Jazz Awards, Jazz Journal’s Album of The Year), quartet and big band leader, recording artist, author, historian, record producer, archivist, magazine columnist and latterly blogger.

However, for all these varied skills he identifies most strongly as a powerfully swinging, straight-ahead tenor saxophonist, one capable of taking the audiences who hear him on a roller-coaster ride encompassing everything from energetic bebop to heartfelt balladry.

And it’s in this guise that he’s become a solid fixture on the UK jazz landscape, regularly playing sold-out gigs at major festivals (EFG London Jazz Festival, Brecon, Swanage, Scarborough, Wigan etc.) and world famous club venues (Ronnie Scott’s).

A charismatic performer, gifted with a dry observational wit, he’s never lost sight of the fact that jazz is entertainment as much as self-expression and whether playing, writing or articulately holding forth on his favourite subject – UK jazz history – he’s an infectiously passionate communicator.

Simon Spillett (tenor sax)
Matt Ratcliffe (piano)
Alec Dankworth (bass)
Pete Cater (drums)

Across the Atlantic Ocean, from the unlikely locations of Huddersfield, Yorkshire and Kansas City, USA,
artists Carol Hodge and Julia Othmer have been holding a unique correspondence. The two
piano-playing, singing songcrafters have struck up a pen pal relationship of songs, bringing light to what
divides and unites us, geographically, politically and personally.
Julia and Carol met on tour in 2018, opening up in the UK for Welsh legends The Alarm, and quickly
bonded over their shared love of all things heart-centred and magickal. They toured together again in
2019, and vowed to make it a regular occurrence, until the pandemic hit. The Selenite Songs Project
sees these two powerful women joining forces once again, to reflect light and create connection.
Since December 2023, Carol and Julia have ritualized a songwriting commitment to one another. Each
month, they challenge themselves to write a song on the first new moon of each month. A few strict rules
apply:

  1. Write in response to the songwriting prompt (prompts are brainstormed by the artists and their
audiences on supporters of social media)
  2. Spend a maximum of 2 hours writing the song
  3. The resulting recordings are to be only piano, voice, and found sounds.
The Selenite Songs tour will feature songs Carol and Julia wrote during the six month project and
include conversation about the process and the story behind each song. There will also be an element of
audience participation, including a live co-creation with the crowd, ensuring each night of the tour will be a
    magically unique experience.
With over 40 years of live touring and recording experience between them, this is a unique invitation to
explore the artistic alchemy of two veteran performing songwriters. Openly sharing their process, these
artists hope to cultivate a warm and humorous dialogue of collaboration, inspiration and craft at each
    performance.
This tour is the only time these songs will be performed together live, in an intimate environment. At the
end of the tour, every ticket holder will be gifted a limited edition recording from these two songstresses.
